Hey friends!! Due to the cold weather here lately, I have been obsessed with tea. Mint green tea, earl grey and chai tea have been a few of my favourites this month, and my aunt recently gave me a recipe to make my own chai tea (which was delicious!) and I decided to share it with you 🙂
You will need: (serves 6 people generously)
- 2 cups of milk
- 12 green cardamom pods
- 1 tsp of fennel seeds or 1 star Anise
- 8 cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 4 black peppercorns
- 1 inch fresh ginger sliced
- 4 black tea bags
- 6 cups of water
- 1/2 cup of brown sugar/honey
To make the chai tea mix as a gift:
- 12 green cardamom pods
- 2 tsp of fennel seeds
- 1/2 tsp whole cloves
- 1/2 tsp whole coriander seeds
- 4 inches of cinnamon bark
- 1/2 tsp whole red peppercorns
- 1/2 tsp whole black peppercorns
- 3 tbsp diced candied ginger
- 1/3 cup loose black tea
On a cookie sheet, bake everything (except the candied ginger and tea) for 3-5 minutes, making sure you don’t burn them. Let them cool and then slightly crush with a rolling pin and break up the cinnamon bark. Toss in a bowl with the candied ginger and the loose tea. Pour into a small container (air tight is ideal).
Don’t forget to include these instructions to make the Chai Tea if you give it as a gift:
1 cup water, 1/2 cup milk, 1 Tablespoon of Chai tea mix in tea bag or steeper, sugar/honey to taste.
Bring the water to a boil and add the teabag/steeper. Turn off the heat and let steep for about 5 minutes. Add the milk, and reheat until hot. Remove from heat, discard teabag, sweeten to taste, enjoy!
Most of the spices you can find at your usual grocery store, however, we found them less expensive at South Asian grocery stores. I found loose black tea at Home Sense, but you could also get it at David’s Tea or Teavana. Fill in cute containers and add a festive steeper to make a thoughtful gift.
